moon cookies started the way most good things do - out of burnout, a leap of faith, and a cookie we couldn't stop thinking about.
A few years into corporate life, the two of us (Kim & Justin) both hit a wall. So we did something that had our families questioning our sanity: we packed our bags and spent close to a year backpacking across continents (@justwithkim), with no real plan beyond figuring out what we actually wanted to do next.
Somewhere along the way, Kim bit into a New York–style cookie in NYC - the kind with crackly edges, a molten centre, and the sort of richness that makes you go quiet for a second. We came home and searched for anything close to it in Singapore. Nothing came close. So we decided to make it ourselves.
What followed was hundreds of hours in our home kitchen, countless failed batches, and a slow obsession with getting every detail right — the butter, the bake, the bite. When we finally landed on something we were proud of (something that, dare we say, might even be better), we set up a tiny Instagram page (@mooncookiesbake), took orders over WhatsApp, and dropped our very first batch of 160 cookies to friends and complete strangers somehow sold out in 3 hours!
Why the name "moon"?
Our name came from the story of a person we met during our travels to the desert of Chile. He grew up and worked all his life along the Western coast of Chile, but had a dream to move to the desert and build his own cabin in the remote darkness so that he could be able to see the moon and the stars every night.
When he finally earned enough money, he packed up and left, and learned to build everything with his own two hands (and the help of Youtube). Eventually his efforts gave birth to his dream cabin, which he shares with travellers passing by the desert
It was there, as we were hearing his story and looking at the moon, that we found the courage to make our own dreams a reality. Because sometimes, all you need is a little courage to shoot for the moon.
