Black-Banded Leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus)

Black-Banded Leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus)

R 123,75

The Black-Banded Leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus) is a striking, highly active freshwater fish native to the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in South America. Belonging to the family Anostomidae, they are closely related to tetras and piranhas and are well-known in the aquarium hobby for their distinct bumblebee-like appearance and unique behaviors.

Key Characteristics & Biology

• The "Rabbit" Fish: The name Leporinus translates to "little hare" or "rabbit-like". This refers to their unique snout and two prominent, rabbit-like front teeth, which they use to graze on algae, plants, and snails.
• Shifting Stripes: As juveniles, they start out with around 5 bold black bands on a golden-yellow body. As they mature, these bands split and multiply, leaving adults with 9 to 10 deep black vertical bands.
• Headdown Swimming: They are built with a torpedo-shaped body designed for fast-flowing water. They frequently swim or hover at a head-down angle (giving them the nickname "banded headstanders") to continuously graze along surfaces.
• Size: They are large aquarium fish, reaching an adult length of up to 30 cm (12 inches).

Aquarium Care Summary

Attribute Requirements & Specifications
Tank Size Minimum 250 to 400 litres for a single specimen; 500+ litres (125–180 gallons) is highly recommended for groups.
Water Parameters Temperature: 20–28°C
Diet Benthic Omnivore / Herbivore. They require heavy plant matter, algae flakes, and fresh vegetables, supplemented with pellets and occasional protein treats like bloodworms.
Tank Setup Requires a tight-fitting, secure lid as they are phenomenal jumpers. Avoid live plants entirely—their powerful teeth will completely decimate vegetation within a few hours.
Temperament Semi-aggressive and territorial. They can be kept singly or in groups of 5 or more to distribute conspecific aggression. Tankmates should be fast, robust, medium-to-large species (e.g., larger barbs, loaches, or sharks).
