The Golden Redtail Catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) and its rare color morphs—such as the Golden, Platinum, and Black Panda—are prized, selectively bred variants of the massive South American Redtail Catfish.
Key Characteristics & Morphs
• Golden Redtail: Features a golden-yellow to cream body paired with the species' signature bright reddish-orange tail.
• Platinum Redtail: Displays a silvery-white or platinum appearance with pale fins.
• Black Panda Redtail: Features distinct high-contrast black-and-white markings resembling a panda.
• Origin: These color mutations do not occur naturally in the wild; they are produced through selective breeding in specialized fish farms (primarily in Southeast Asia).
Care & Requirements
• Size: These are true "monster fish" that can grow over 4 feet (1.2+ meters) in length and exceed heavy weights.
• Housing: Requires a massive aquarium, custom indoor tank, or large pond (minimum 2,000+ liters or larger as they mature).
• Diet: Voracious carnivores requiring meaty foods like fish, prawns, and specialized large carnivorous pellets.
• Experience Level: Strictly recommended for advanced/expert aquarists with heavy-duty filtration and large space capacities.
