The Tiger Redtail Botia (commonly known as the Redtail Loach or Blue Botia, scientifically classified as Yasuhikotakia modesta) is a hardy, lively freshwater bottom-dweller native to the river basins of Southeast Asia. They are highly favored in the aquarium hobby for their distinct bluish-gray bodies and vibrant orange-to-red fins.
Quick Care Overview
• Tank Size: Minimum 200L (approx. 50–55 gallons) for a small group. They need a tight-fitting lid as they are accomplished jumpers.
• Water Parameters: Temperature of 24–28°C, pH of 6.0–7.5, and clean, well-oxygenated water with strong filtration.
• Size & Lifespan: They typically reach 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) in captivity and can live for 5 to 15 years with proper care.
• Diet: Omnivorous. They actively scavenge for sinking pellets, flake food, and frozen meats like bloodworms. They are also excellent natural predators of pest snails.
Behavior and Compatibility
These fish are semi-aggressive and highly social. They establish a complex pecking order and should always be kept in groups of at least 4 to 6. Keeping them in a group spreads out their natural "playful bullying" and reduces aggression toward tankmates.
They are boisterous and possess sub-ocular spines under their eyes that deploy when threatened, so they should be housed with robust tankmates (like larger barbs, gouramis, or cichlids) rather than slow, timid fish. When excited or establishing dominance, they are known to make distinct clicking noises.
