Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' (often mislabeled in the hobby as Hemianthus micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' or scientifically classified as Micranthemum tweediei) is one of the most popular, beginner-friendly aquarium carpeting plants in aquascaping. Originating from Argentina, it features tiny, rounded, vibrant green leaves that quickly spread across the substrate via runners to form a lush, dense foreground mat.
Key Features:
Ease of Growth: It looks highly similar to the notoriously difficult Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC Cuba), but has a much stronger root system and is vastly easier to grow.
Versatility: Unlike many carpeting plants that require a substrate, Monte Carlo can also be grown as an epiphyte. It can be wedged into hardscape or attached to rocks and driftwood, where it will trail downward in a beautiful cascading effect.Low-Tech Adaptability: While it thrives and carpets much faster under high light and CO₂ injection, it is resilient enough to survive and steadily grow in lower lighting conditions without supplemental CO₂.

Maintenance & Trimming:
Because it grows relatively fast, a Monte Carlo carpet can become too thick over time. If the top layer blocks light from reaching the bottom layers, the roots will die, causing the entire carpet to detach and float to the surface.
Use sharp, curved aquascaping scissors to trim the plant frequently and aggressively. Keeping the mat trimmed down to a depth of 1–2 cm ensures long-term health and pristine aesthetic appeal. The trimmings can easily be replanted elsewhere to start a new carpet.
