Vallisneria—commonly known as eelgrass or tape grass—is a genus of hardy, freshwater aquatic plants popular in the aquarium hobby. Known for their long, ribbon-like leaves, these plants are highly adaptable, fast-growing, and perfect for creating a dense, jungle-like backdrop in your tank.
Care Requirements:
Lighting: Low to high. While it can survive in basic low-light setups, moderate to high lighting promotes faster, thicker growth and more vibrant coloration.
Substrate & Nutrients:
Heavy root feeders. They flourish best in active substrates like aqua soil, but if grown in inert sand or gravel, they require regular supplementation with root tabs.
Water Parameters:
Highly flexible, though they strongly prefer harder, alkaline water. Ideal parameters include a temperature range of 20–28°C and a pH of 6.5–8.4.
CO2 Supplements:
Not required. They are excellent for low-tech setups.
Key Growth Habits:
Rapid Propagation: Prolific spreaders. Once established, Vallisneria rapidly sends out horizontal runners (stolons) across the substrate to sprout new daughter plants.
Chemical Warning: Extremely sensitive to liquid carbon supplements (such as glutaraldehyde). Heavy doses can cause the plant to quickly "melt" and die.
Tank Benefits: Provides excellent shelter for fry, shrimp, and shy fish while absorbing excess nitrates to help combat algae outbreaks.
