In the commercial aquarium trade, the term "Algae Eater Normal" typically refers to either the wild-type/standard variation of the Chinese Algae Eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) or a standard Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.). Local fish suppliers often use this label to separate standard brown/striped varieties from selectively bred color morphs like "Albino," "Super Red," or "Lemon".
Because "normal" algae eaters vary wildly in behavior and size depending on the exact species you buy, it is important to identify what you have:
1. Chinese Algae Eater (Standard / Normal)
• Appearance: Slender, gold-brown to olive body with a distinct dark horizontal line or spot pattern along its side.
• Behavior: They are excellent at devouring algae when they are young and small (4–5 cm). However, as they grow larger, they become highly aggressive. They stop eating algae, require protein, and will frequently attack tank mates to suck on their slime coats.
• Tank Size: Can reach up to 25 cm and require a minimum of 100–200 litres as adults.
