Aquatic Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum)
Also known as Coontail, this is a rootless, free-floating freshwater plant found on every continent except Antarctica.
Appearance: It has long, bushy stems with whorls of stiff, needle-like leaves that resemble a raccoon's tail.
Aquarium Benefits:
Water Purifier: It is a "nitrate buster," rapidly absorbing ammonia, nitrates, and phosphates to keep water clean.
Oxygenator: It effectively oxygenates the water through fast photosynthesis.
Fry Shelter: Its dense, feathery foliage provides excellent hiding spots for baby fish (fry) and shrimp.
Care: It is extremely hardy and beginner-friendly, requiring no substrate, CO2, or special lighting. However, it grows very fast and requires regular trimming.
Ecological Impact: While beneficial in controlled settings, it can be an invasive weed in the wild, outcompeting native plants and clogging waterways or hydroelectric dams.
