Hecq's Shell-Dweller (scientific name: Lepidiolamprologus hecqui, formerly Neolamprologus hecqui) is a robust species of cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. Unlike many smaller "shellies," this species is medium-sized and known for its more aggressive and bold personality.
Key Characteristics
Size: Males are larger, typically reaching a maximum length of about 8 centimetres (3.1 inches).
Behaviour: They are territorial and can be semi-aggressive, particularly toward other males of the same species or similarly sized bottom-dwellers.
Habitat: In their natural habitat, they use empty Neothauma snail shells for shelter, protection, and as breeding sites.
Hardiness: They are considered "robust" for shell-dwellers, meaning they can often be kept with slightly larger Tanganyikan cichlids that more delicate species might not tolerate.
Aquarium Care
Tank Setup: A sandy substrate is essential as they are active diggers who like to bury or rearrange their shells. Provide multiple shells per fish (such as escargot or apple snail shells).
Water Parameters: They require hard, alkaline water with a pH between 7.5 and 9.0 and temperatures ranging from 23°C to 26°C (73°F–79°F).
Diet: These fish are carnivores/omnivores. They thrive on a variety of foods including high-quality flakes, nano pellets, and frozen or live treats like brine shrimp.
Tank Mates: While they can live in community tanks with other Tanganyikan species like Julidochromis or Altolamprologus, caution is advised with other shell-dwellers due to their territorial nature.
