The Red Head Tapajos (Geophagus sp. 'Red Head Tapajos') is a visually striking South American cichlid native to the Tapajós River basin in Brazil. Known for its vibrant red-orange head and iridescent scales, it is a popular "eartheater" cichlid due to its peaceful temperament and unique sifting behavior.

Key Characteristics (2026 Data)
Size: They typically grow to 15–20 cm (6–8 inches), with males being slightly larger and more colorful than females.
Lifespan: With proper care, they live for 8–10 years.
Behavior: Generally peaceful and community-friendly, though they can become territorial during breeding. They are naturally social and thrive best in groups of 4–8 individuals.

Aquarium Requirements
Tank Size: A minimum of 200 litres (approx. 55–75 gallons) is recommended for a small group.
Substrate: Fine sand is essential. They naturally sift sand through their gills to find food; gravel can damage their delicate mouthparts.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24°C–30°C (75°F–86°F).
pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Hardness: Soft to moderate (5–15 dGH).
Decor: Use driftwood, rocks, and hardy plants (like Anubias or Java Fern) to provide hiding spots, while leaving open sandy areas for sifting.

Diet and Nutrition
As omnivores, they require a varied diet:
Staple: High-quality sinking cichlid pellets or granules.
Protein: Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
Vegetable Matter: Spirulina or blanched spinach to maintain health and color.

Breeding
They are substrate-spawning mouthbrooders.
Process: Parents lay eggs on a flat surface (rocks or leaves). After fertilization, the female (and sometimes the male) will pick up the eggs or larvae to incubate them in their mouths for protection.
Care: Both parents are typically excellent guardians of the fry.

Compatible Tank Mates
Ideal companions include other non-aggressive species:
Mid-water: Large tetras, Angelfish, and Severums.
Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras and Plecos.
Avoid: Highly aggressive species (e.g., Oscars or Jaguars) that may damage their fins or outcompete them for food.
