The Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) is a vibrant, small freshwater species native to the Mamberamo River basin in West Papua, Indonesia. Known for its iridescent electric blue body and contrasting fins, it is a popular choice for planted community aquariums.

Key Characteristics (2026)
Appearance: They feature a metallic blue body with fins that range from bright red (males) to yellow/orange (females).
Size: Adults typically reach a maximum length of 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches).
Lifespan: Generally 3–5 years with proper care.
Behavior: They are highly active, peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10 to reduce stress and encourage vibrant coloration.

Care Requirements
Tank Size: Minimum of 60–75 litres (15–20 gallons); longer tanks are preferred due to their active swimming nature.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F).
pH: 6.5–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (5–15 dGH).
Diet: Omnivorous; they thrive on a mix of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
Environment: They prefer well-planted aquariums with plenty of open horizontal swimming space and moderate water flow.

Tank Mates
They are compatible with other peaceful, similarly sized species such as tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid housing them with aggressive fish or slow-moving species that might be overwhelmed by their constant activity.
