The Albino Dantum Angelfish is a striking, selectively bred variety of Pterophyllum scalare known for its towering body shape and ethereal, all-white appearance. While often marketed as a hybrid with the wild Altum angelfish (Pterophyllum altum), it is generally considered a highly refined strain of standard angelfish that mimics the Altum's majestic stature.
Key Characteristics
Appearance: Features a solid white or cream-coloured body with bright red eyes and long, flowing fins.
Size: Can reach an adult size of approximately 15 cm (6 inches) in body length, but their impressive vertical fin span requires tall aquariums.
Behavior: Generally peaceful when young, though they may become semi-aggressive or territorial as they reach maturity, particularly during spawning.
Care Requirements
Water Conditions:
Temperature: Prefers warm water between 24–29°C (76–84°F).
pH Level: Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water (6.5–7.5).
Sensitivity: As albinos, they are more sensitive to bright light; providing floating plants or lower light levels is recommended.
Tank Setup:
Minimum Size: At least 120 litres (30 gallons) for a pair, though 200+ litres is ideal for a group or community.
Height: Because of their tall body shape, a vertically oriented tank is essential to accommodate their finnage.
Diet: They are omnivorous and enjoy a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live treats like bloodworms and daphnia.
Origins and Controversy
The "Dantum" line was originally developed by Israeli breeder Shahar Danziger. The name is a portmanteau of "Danziger" and "Altum". Although many retailers claim they are a cross between P. scalare and P. altum, genetic evidence often suggests they are a unique line of P. scalare—possibly originating from wild Peruvian Rio Nanay stock—that has been bred for its Altum-like shape.
