Freshwater Hatchetfish (Family Gasteropelecidae)
These fish are native to South and Central America, primarily the Amazon Basin.
Appearance: They have a deep, laterally compressed body that resembles a hatchet blade with a nearly straight back.
"Flight" Capability: They are the only "true" flying fish, using powerful pectoral muscles (up to 25% of their body weight) to flap their fins and lift out of the water to catch insects or escape predators.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Level: They are strict surface dwellers.
Jumpers: A tight-fitting lid is mandatory because they will leap out of the tank if startled.
Social: They are peaceful schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6 to 10.
Common Species: Marbled Hatchetfish (Carnegiella strigata), Silver Hatchetfish (Gasteropelecus sternicla), and Pygmy Hatchetfish (Carnegiella myersi).
