The Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a vibrant, iridescent freshwater fish native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. Often called the "jewel of the aquarium," it is prized for its rainbow-like scales and the long, flowing fins found on males.

Key Characteristics
Appearance: Iridescent silver bodies with horizontal bands of blue, gold, and red. Males are larger and more colourful, developing feathery, elongated fin trailers as they mature.
Size: Typically grows to 8–10 cm (approx. 3–4 inches).
Lifespan: Generally lives between 3 to 5 years with proper care.
Temperament: Peaceful and active. They are schooling fish and must be kept in groups of at least 6 to feel secure and display their best colours.

Aquarium Care
Tank Size: Requires a minimum of 100–120 litres (roughly 30–40 gallons). A 4-foot long tank is recommended to provide ample swimming space for this active species.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 23°C to 28°C (73°F to 82°F).
pH: 6.0 to 7.5 (prefers soft, slightly acidic water).
Environment: Prefers planted aquariums with dim lighting and open areas for swimming. Floating plants can help diffuse light, making them feel more comfortable.
Diet: Omnivorous and not picky. They thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.

Tank Mates
Congo tetras are excellent for community tanks. Suitable companions include:
Peaceful fish: Rainbowfish, Corydoras, and other larger tetras.
Avoid: Fin-nippers (who may target the males' long fins) or very small, shy species that might be intimidated by their active swimming.
