Horseface Loaches

Horseface Loaches

R 225,00

The horseface loach (Acantopsis dialuzona), also known as the horsehead or long-nosed loach, is a peaceful, shy bottom-dweller native to the fast-flowing rivers of Southeast Asia. These fish are easily identified by their elongated bodies and unique, horse-like muzzles.

Key Characteristics & Behaviour
Sand Sifting & Burying: They are natural sand sifters, filtering substrate through their gills to find food. They often bury themselves in the sand with only their eyes and noses visible.
Nocturnal Activity: While predominantly active at night, they may venture out during the day if they feel secure.
Defense Mechanism: Like many loaches, they possess retractable, sharp spines beneath their eyes for protection; use caution when netting them to avoid entanglement.
Growth: They can grow up to 22–30 cm (8–12 inches), though they often remain smaller in captivity.

Aquarium Care Requirements
Substrate: A soft, fine sand substrate is mandatory. Gravel or coarse material can cause injury or inhibit their natural sifting behaviour.
Tank Size: A minimum of 150–200 litres (roughly 4 feet in length) is recommended to accommodate their size and social needs.
Water Conditions: They require clean, well-oxygenated water with a moderate flow.
Temperature: 18°C – 28°C (64°F – 82°F).
pH: 6.0 – 7.5.
Diet: Omnivorous scavengers that accept sinking pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.
Tankmates: Best kept in groups of 6 or more with other peaceful community fish like rasboras, tetras, and danios. Avoid aggressive species that might stress them.
