The Slate Corydoras (Corydoras concolor), also known as the Concolor Cory, is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling catfish native to the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. It is highly regarded by aquarists for its subtle, elegant coloration and active schooling behavior.
Key Characteristics
Appearance: Features a deep, slate-grey to blue-grey body with a pale underside. Adults often display iridescent green or blue highlights on the gill plates and a rusty orange tinge on their fins.
Size: Typically reaches an adult length of 5.5 to 6 cm (approximately 2.2 to 2.4 inches).
Sexual Dimorphism: Females are generally larger and rounder when viewed from above. Mature males develop a noticeably tall, pointed dorsal fin.
Aquarium Care & Requirements
Social Needs: As a gregarious species, they must be kept in groups of at least 6 to feel secure and exhibit natural behaviors.
Substrate: A soft sandy substrate is essential. Sharp gravel can damage their delicate barbels (whiskers), leading to infections.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F).
pH: 6.0–7.5 (prefers slightly acidic to neutral).
Hardness: 2–25 dH (adaptable to various levels).
Environment: Thrives in well-planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots like bogwood, rocks, or caves.
Diet & Compatibility
Feeding: They are omnivorous micropredators. Provide a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
Tank Mates: Excellent for community tanks. They pair well with peaceful species such as Tetras, Dwarf Cichlids, Gouramis, and larger ornamental shrimp.
