Three line/Juli Corydoras (longfin genetics)

The Three-line Corydoras (Corydoras trilineatus) and the Julii Corydoras (Corydoras julii) are two distinct but frequently confused species in the aquarium hobby. While "Longfin" varieties are selectively bred in several Corydoras species (like the Peppered Cory), they are less common for the trilineatus or julii lineages.

Distinction: Three-line vs. Julii
Most fish sold as "Julii Corys" are actually Three-line Corys (C. trilineatus).
Three-line Cory (C. trilineatus): Often called the "False Julii". It features reticulated (maze-like) patterns on its head and a more pronounced, solid horizontal stripe.
Julii Cory (C. julii): Rare in the hobby and typically wild-caught. It is distinguished by fine, individual black spots on the head rather than connected lines.

Longfin Genetics
The "Longfin" trait in Corydoras is a dominant or semi-dominant genetic mutation that results in elongated dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins.
Availability: While common in Corydoras paleatus (Peppered) and Corydoras aeneus (Bronze/Albino), longfin versions of trilineatus are specialty items and may be found through boutique breeders or specific importers.
Care: Longfin varieties require slower water flow and strictly non-abrasive substrates (like fine sand) to prevent their delicate, trailing fins from tearing or developing fin rot.

Quick Care Guide
Both species thrive under similar conditions:
Temperature: 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
pH & Hardness: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5) and soft to medium hardness.
Social Needs: They are highly social and must be kept in groups of at least 6 to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.
Diet: Omnivorous bottom-feeders; they should be fed sinking pellets, high-quality flakes, and frozen or live treats like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
