The Orange Mexican Dwarf Crayfish (Cambarellus patzcuarensis "Orange"), commonly known as the CPO crayfish, is a popular freshwater invertebrate prized for its vibrant fiery-orange colour and "mini-lobster" appearance. Unlike their larger, more aggressive relatives, these dwarf crayfish are relatively peaceful and suitable for many community aquariums.

Key Characteristics
Size: They remain small, typically reaching a maximum length of 1.5 to 2 inches (4–5 cm).
Lifespan: On average, they live for 2 to 3 years.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but territorial with their own species. They may opportunistically nip at slow-moving fish or small shrimp.
Activity: Highly active and visible during the day, unlike most nocturnal crayfish species.

Care & Tank Requirements
These crayfish are hardy and adaptable, making them a good choice for beginners.

Minimum Tank Size: At least 5 gallons for a single crayfish, though 10 gallons is recommended for pairs or small groups.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 16°C – 26°C (60°F – 78°F).
pH: 6.0 – 8.0 (neutral to slightly alkaline is often preferred).
Hardness: They require moderately hard water to support healthy molting and exoskeleton growth.
Setup: A well-structured tank with plenty of hiding spots (caves, PVC pipes, driftwood, and rocks) is essential, especially when they are vulnerable during molting.
Diet: Omnivorous scavengers. They eat sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and blanched vegetables like zucchini or peas.

Compatibility & Breeding
Tank Mates: Best kept with fast-moving, mid-to-top dwelling fish like Rasboras or Tetras. Avoid large, aggressive fish (Cichlids) or bottom-dwellers with long fins that might be nipped.
Breeding: They breed readily in home aquaria. Females carry eggs (up to 60) under their tails for 3–4 weeks until they hatch as tiny, fully formed "miniatures" of the adults.
Sexing: Males have an extra set of stiffened pleopods (appendages) near the base of their legs, while females do not.

Important Warning: Never use aquarium products containing copper, as it is highly toxic to all invertebrates, including CPO crayfish.
