Akysis prashadi, commonly known as the Indawgyi stream catfish or Burmese marble catfish, is a small, peaceful freshwater fish native to the fast-flowing streams and rivers of Myanmar, specifically the Irrawaddy River drainage.
Physical Characteristics
Size: Typically reaches a maximum length of about 6–7 cm (approx. 2.5 inches).
Appearance: Features a mottled black and tan body with a stout shape and tuberculate skin.
Unique Features: Like other members of the genus Akysis, it lacks a swim bladder, which is an adaptation to its life in fast-moving water. It also possesses venomous pectoral spines used for defense, requiring caution when handling.
Habitat & Behaviour
Environment: Thrives in cool, highly oxygenated, fast-moving water with plenty of shade and cover from leaf litter or rocks.
Behaviour: This species is primarily nocturnal and has a habit of burying itself in sandy substrate, often leaving only its nasal barbels exposed.
Diet: It is a bottom-feeder that prefers live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia; it may sometimes ignore commercially prepared dry foods.
Aquarium Care
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 18–27°C (64–81°F).
pH: 6.5–7.2.
Tank Setup: Best kept in aquariums with a fine sand substrate to accommodate its burying behaviour, along with driftwood and plants for hiding.
Tank Mates: Suitable for peaceful community tanks with other small species like rasboras, tetras, or barbs.
