The Common Shortfin Pleco, more accurately known as the Common Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.), is one of the most popular algae-eating catfish in the aquarium hobby. Unlike the "Common Pleco" (Hypostomus plecostomus), which can grow up to 60 cm, the Shortfin Bristlenose remains a manageable size of 10–15 cm.

Key Characteristics
Appearance: They have a flattened, armoured body typically in dark brown or grey with lighter spots.
Distinctive Feature: Mature males develop fleshy, tentacle-like "bristles" on their snouts; females have few to no bristles.
"Shortfin" vs. "Longfin": The "Shortfin" designation distinguishes this variety from the Longfin Bristlenose, which has trailing, veil-like fins.

Aquarium Care
Tank Size: A minimum of 60 to 100 litres is recommended.
Water Conditions:
Temperature: 22°C – 28°C.
pH: 6.5 – 7.5.
Diet: While they are excellent algae eaters, they require supplemental feeding with algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables like zucchini.
Habitat: They are nocturnal and require caves and driftwood for hiding and essential dietary fibre.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and suitable for community tanks, though males can be territorial toward each other.
