The Albino Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus) is a popular, hardy freshwater catfish prized for its striking golden-yellow colouration and its efficiency as an algae eater. Reaching a manageable size of 10–15 cm (4–6 inches), it is a practical alternative to common plecos that often outgrow home aquariums.
Key Characteristics
Appearance: Features a flat, armored body and pinkish-red eyes. Males develop prominent, fleshy "bristles" or tentacles on their snouts as they mature, while females have few to no bristles.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and solitary, though males can be territorial with other plecos.
Lifespan: Typically lives 5 to 10 years with proper care.
Variations: Also available in a "Longfin" variety with flowing, angelic fins.
Care & Tank Requirements
To keep an Albino Bristlenose healthy, follow these guidelines:
Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons (approx. 75–80L) for a single adult.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–27°C (72–80°F).
pH: 6.5–7.5.
Hardness: Soft to medium (2–12 dGH).
Decor: Essential to include driftwood (for digestion and biofilm) and caves or hiding spots, as they are primarily nocturnal.
Diet: Primarily herbivores. While they eat algae, their diet must be supplemented with:
Sinking algae wafers or spirulina pellets.
Blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, or spinach.
Occasional meaty treats (e.g., bloodworms) sparingly.
Breeding
They are relatively easy to breed in captivity. Males will claim a cave, and once the female lays her adhesive orange eggs, the male guards and fans them until they hatch (usually within 5–10 days). Albinism is a recessive genetic trait; breeding two albinos will result in albino offspring, but crossing with a standard brown pleco often produces dark-coloured fry.
