Core Aquarium Requirements
A proper setup for an L397 must prioritise wood, as they are xylivorous (wood-eaters) and use it for both nutrition and shelter.
Minimum Tank Size: Experts suggest a minimum of 75–115 litres (20–30 gallons) for a single specimen.
Essential Furniture: High-quality driftwood is mandatory; they graze on the wood surface and biofilm. Narrow caves or crevices are also needed for hiding and breeding.
Water Conditions: They thrive in stable, tropical conditions with moderate water flow.
Temperature: 24°C–30°C (75°F–86°F).
pH Range: Slightly acidic to neutral, typically 6.5–7.5.
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–15 dGH).
Diet and Nutrition
While they primarily consume wood and biofilm, a varied diet is essential for long-term health.
Wood: Multiple types of soft driftwood should always be available.
Vegetables: Offer fresh, blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and sweet potato.
Prepared Foods: Sinking algae wafers, spirulina pellets, and specialized wood-based foods like Repashy Morning Wood are highly recommended.
Proteins: Occasional treats of bloodworms or brine shrimp can be provided, but protein should remain a small portion of their diet.
Behavior and Compatibility
Temperament: Generally peaceful and shy, making them excellent community fish.
Territoriality: Males can become territorial toward other males or similar species over preferred caves or feeding spots.
Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 10 to 15 years
