Oldonyo Sabuk National Park Hike

Ksh 2,500.00

🔴 SATURDAY, 25TH APRIL 2026: WEEKEND HIKE〽️

Oldonyo Sabuk, also known as Kilimambogo is referred to by the local Kamba community as 'The mountain of the buffalo' and to the Maasai community as 'The big mountain' is a single, massive dome-shaped mountain located in Machakos County, roughly 85 km (up to 1.5 hours drive) northeast of Nairobi through the Thika Superhighway.

The mountain's highlight is the summit (2,145m ASL: 7,037 ft), reached via a relentless, gradual ascent. The murram trail begins at the main gate, winding through dense montane forest, open woodland and scrub, and rocky, exposed summit area. Shortcuts cut straight up the slope, steeper and more rugged, for those seeking a quicker and more intense push.

At the summit, the experience shifts from enclosed to expansive. You step out of the trees into open space, and suddenly, the plains of Athi River stretch endlessly below. From a distance, you can spot features like farmlands, rivers, and scattered hills, and on a clear day, far-off highlands appear on the horizon.

The mountain also has a historical touch at the summit, the grave of Lord William Northrop Macmillan, which adds a reflective, almost timeless feel to the place. The entire experience blends solitude, steady effort, and reward. It's not just about reaching the peak, it's about watching the landscape transform as you climb, from shaded forest to sweeping sky.

For a mountain so close to Nairobi, Oldonyo Sabuk is a favorite destination for day trips and nature enthusiasts seeking an immersive escape.
