Virexim is an antibiotic medication that contains cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin. Each capsule contains 400 mg of cefixime and is typically packaged in a box containing 10 strips of 10 capsules each.
Key Uses
Virexim is indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Effective against infections caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis.
- Otitis Media: Treats middle ear infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
- Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis: Used for infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Bronchitis and Pneumonia: Effective in treating acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and pneumonia.
- Typhoid Fever: Used for treating enteric fever.
- Gonorrhea: Treats uncomplicated gonococcal infections.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which is essential for bacterial growth and survival. This disruption leads to the death of the bacteria responsible for the infection.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: The usual dosage is typically 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection being treated.
- Pediatric Patients: For children, the dosage is based on weight:
- Children under 45 kg: 8 mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hours.
- Children over 45 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours.
Capsules should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, and it is recommended to take them at the same time every day to maintain even levels in the bloodstream.
