Cefimed is an oral antibiotic suspension that contains cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is commonly used to treat various bacterial infections due to its effectiveness against a broad spectrum of bacteria.
Key Uses
Cefixime is indicated for the treatment of:
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Effective against infections caused by susceptible strains of Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis.
- Otitis Media: Treats middle ear infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
- Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis: Used for infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Bronchitis: Effective in treating acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
- Gonorrhea: Treats uncomplicated gonococcal infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which is essential for bacterial growth and survival. By disrupting this process, cefixime effectively kills the bacteria, helping to clear the infection.
Dosage and Administration
- Adults: The usual dosage for adults is typically 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours, depending on the type of infection being treated.
- Pediatric Patients: For children, the dosage is usually based on weight:
- Children under 45 kg: 8 mg/kg once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hours.
- Children over 45 kg: 400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours.
The suspension should be shaken well before use and can be taken with or without food.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Dizziness
- Allergic reactions (rash, itching)
Serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions, liver dysfunction, and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
Warnings and Precautions
- Contraindications: Not suitable for individuals with known hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Renal Impairment: Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired kidney function.
Storage
Store Cefimed at room temperature (below 25°C), away from moisture and direct sunlight. After reconstitution, it should typically be refrigerated and used within a specified period (usually within 14 days).
