Artemether is an antimalarial medication used primarily for the treatment of severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It is a derivative of artemisinin and is known for its rapid action against malaria parasites. The injection form is particularly useful in cases where oral administration is not possible, such as in patients with persistent vomiting.

Indications
Artemether Injection is indicated for:
- Severe Falciparum Malaria: Treatment of confirmed cases in areas where quinine is ineffective.
- Initial Treatment of Uncomplicated Malaria: When oral therapy cannot be administered due to vomiting or other reasons.

Dosage and Administration
- Adults and Children Over 6 Months:
- Loading Dose: Administer 3.2 mg/kg as an intramuscular injection on the first day.
- Maintenance Dose: Follow with 1.6 mg/kg daily until the patient can tolerate oral medication or for a maximum of 7 days.

- Dosage Table for Children:

| Weight (kg) | Loading Dose (ml) | Maintenance Dose (ml) |
|-------------|--------------------|------------------------|
| 3-4 | 0.2 ml | 0.1 ml |
| 5-6 | 0.3 ml | 0.15 ml |
| 7-9 | 0.4 ml | 0.2 ml |
| 10-14 | 0.6 ml | 0.3 ml |
| 15-19 | 0.8 ml | 0.4 ml |
| 20-29 | 1.2 ml | 0.6 ml |
| 30-39 | 1.6 ml | 0.8 ml |
| 40-49 | 2 ml | 1 ml |
| 50-59 | 2.5 ml | 1.2 ml |

Pharmacokinetics
After intramuscular administration, peak plasma concentrations are typically reached within about 6 hours. Artemether has a rapid schizontocidal effect, clearing fever associated with severe falciparum malaria within 30 to 84 hours.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to artemether or any of its components.
- Use should be cautious in patients with a history of cardiac issues, as it may cause QT prolongation.

Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting)
- Dizziness
- Allergic reactions (rash, itching)

Warnings and Precautions
- Pregnancy: Limited experience suggests that artemether should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh potential risks.
- Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe, but consult a healthcare provider.

Storage
Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
