🌱 GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Botanical Name: Citrullus lanatus
Variety: Congo Watermelon
Type: Annual, warm-season fruiting vine

☀️ Sunlight: Full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily.

🌡️ Planting Season: Spring to early summer, once frost danger has passed and soil temperatures are consistently above 20°C.

🌱 Sowing Depth: 2–3 cm deep.

🌱 Germination: Approximately 5–10 days in warm soil, ideally 25–30°C.

📏 Spacing: Allow 1.5–2 metres between plants and approximately 2–3 metres between rows. Congo Watermelon produces vigorous, spreading vines.

🌿 Soil: Fertile, well-draining soil enriched with mature compost. Ideal soil pH is approximately 6.0–6.8.

💧 Watering: Water deeply and consistently, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Avoid waterlogging and reduce excessive watering as fruits approach maturity.

🌼 Pollination: Watermelon plants produce separate male and female flowers. Bees and other pollinators are essential for good fruit development.

🍉 Harvesting: Approximately 90–100 days after planting, depending on growing conditions.

Signs of Ripeness:

- The tendril nearest the fruit stalk becomes brown and dry.
- The underside develops a creamy yellow ground spot.
- The rind becomes less glossy.
- The fruit produces a deeper, hollow sound when tapped.

🌱 SEED-SAVING TIP

Select a fully ripe watermelon from a healthy, productive plant. Remove the mature black seeds, rinse away the pulp and dry thoroughly in a shaded, well-ventilated area before storing.

To maintain variety purity, isolate Congo Watermelon from other watermelon varieties flowering nearby.

🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICAN GROWING TIP

In the Western Cape, plant once spring temperatures have warmed sufficiently, generally from October onwards in suitable frost-free conditions. In colder inland areas, wait until all frost danger has passed.

Mulching around the plants helps conserve moisture and keeps developing fruits off damp soil.
