🌿 CLOVE SCENTED BASIL SEEDS
Ocimum gratissimum

SALES DESCRIPTION

Clove Scented Basil is a wonderfully aromatic basil prized for its powerful, warm fragrance and distinctive clove-like character. Unlike many compact annual basils, Ocimum gratissimum can develop into a vigorous, bushy plant in warm climates, producing lush green foliage and attractive flower spikes. RHS records mature plants at approximately 1.5–2.5 m tall, with a spread of around 1–1.5 m under suitable conditions.

The aromatic leaves make an interesting addition to the herb garden and can be used as a culinary herb. Its flowers also make it an attractive plant for a productive, fragrant garden.

Excellent for herb gardens, large containers and warm, sunny garden beds.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Sowing: Sow during warm weather, preferably from spring into summer. For an earlier start, sow indoors or in seed trays where warmth and moisture can be controlled.

Sowing depth: Sow the small seeds on the surface of a fine, well-draining seed-starting mix and press gently into place. Cover only very lightly.

Germination temperature: Basil germinates well in warm conditions; RHS recommends around 20°C for basil seed germination.

Position: Full sun. Choose a warm, sheltered location.

Soil: Fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Avoid permanently waterlogged conditions.

Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist while the seeds establish, but do not saturate it. Once established, water regularly during dry periods.

Transplanting: Once seedlings are strong and have developed several true leaves, transplant carefully into individual containers or their permanent growing position.

Spacing: Allow generous room for Clove Scented Basil to develop, as Ocimum gratissimum can become considerably larger than ordinary sweet basil.

Pinching & pruning: Regularly harvesting or pinching the growing tips encourages branching and bushier growth. If your main goal is leaf production, removing developing flower spikes can prolong leafy growth.

Harvesting: Harvest healthy leaves as required once plants are well established. Regular harvesting of shoot tips encourages fresh growth.

🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICAN GROWING TIP

Clove Scented Basil loves warmth and sunshine. Sow once conditions have warmed in spring and continue through the warm growing season. In frost-prone regions, treat it as a warm-season plant or protect it during cold weather. In mild, frost-free conditions it may persist considerably longer.
