🌿 PURPLE RUFFLES BASIL SEEDS
Ocimum basilicum ‘Purple Ruffles’
A spectacular edible basil prized for its deeply ruffled, fringed foliage in rich shades of dark purple and burgundy. Purple Ruffles brings dramatic colour to herb gardens, vegetable beds, pots and edible landscapes while providing the familiar fragrance and culinary versatility of basil. The variety is specifically recognised for its dark purple, ruffled and fringed leaves.
Both the leaves and flowers are edible, making this an excellent choice for fresh garnishes, salads, herb dishes and decorative culinary use. Purple-leaved basil is also highly ornamental and particularly attractive when grown in containers or among contrasting green foliage.
Regular harvesting and pinching encourages a fuller, bushier plant. Remove developing flower buds when growing primarily for leaves, or allow selected plants to flower for their attractive blooms.

🌿 PURPLE RUFFLES BASIL — GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
Botanical name: Ocimum basilicum ‘Purple Ruffles’
Sowing season: Sow during the warm growing season once frost danger has passed and conditions have warmed. Basil is frost-sensitive and is generally grown as a warm-season annual.
Sowing depth: Approximately 6 mm (¼ inch) deep.
Germination: Usually 5–10 days when kept at approximately 18–21°C.
Starting indoors: Seeds can be started approximately 6 weeks before planting out. Transplant once seedlings have developed about 3–4 sets of leaves and outdoor conditions are warm enough.
Position: Full sun is ideal. Basil can tolerate some partial shade, but good light encourages vigorous growth.
Soil: Use fertile to moderately rich, moist but well-drained soil.
Spacing: Approximately 10–20 cm apart. This is the metric equivalent of the recommended 4–8 inch spacing for basil.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist while seeds germinate. Once established, water regularly and avoid allowing plants to remain severely dry; basil performs best with regular moisture. Avoid permanently waterlogged soil.
Pinching & pruning: Pinch growing tips regularly to encourage branching and produce a fuller, bushier plant. If growing mainly for leaves, pinch off developing flower buds.
Harvesting: Begin lightly harvesting once plants are well established. For the best leaf crop, harvest before heavy flowering. Regular picking encourages additional growth.
🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICAN GROWING TIP
Purple Ruffles basil is best treated as a warm-season crop. Sow once cold and frost risk has passed in your area. In frost-free or very mild areas, the growing season can be longer. Grow in a sunny, sheltered position and protect plants from cold weather.
