This striking globe artichoke is prized for its beautiful purple-violet flower buds, architectural silvery-green foliage and edible hearts. Purple-budded globe artichokes are both ornamental and edible, making them equally at home in a productive vegetable garden or a decorative border.
The edible portion is actually the plant's immature flower bud. Harvested while the scales are still tightly closed, the buds can be steamed, boiled, roasted, grilled or baked. If allowed to mature instead, they open into spectacular purple, thistle-like flowers that are highly attractive to pollinating insects.
Globe artichokes are large perennial plants rather than a one-season vegetable. Established plants can return for several years, developing into impressive clumps approximately 1–1.5 m tall and up to 1 m wide.

🌱 Growing Instructions
Sowing
For the most reliable establishment, start seeds in trays, modules or individual small pots.
Sow seeds approximately 2 cm deep in a good-quality, free-draining seed-starting medium. Starting seeds individually can help minimise root disturbance when the seedlings are later transplanted.
Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Keep newly sown seeds in a warm, bright position and maintain consistent moisture.
As seedlings develop, move them into larger containers when their roots begin filling their original pots. Before planting outdoors, gradually harden seedlings off so they become accustomed to outdoor conditions.

Choose a warm, sunny and preferably sheltered position.
Globe artichokes perform best in full sun and need considerable room once mature. Avoid low-lying areas that remain wet or are particularly prone to frost.
🌿 Soil
Plant into fertile, well-drained soil enriched with plenty of organic matter or mature compost.
Good drainage is particularly important. Artichokes appreciate moisture while actively growing, but they should not sit in permanently waterlogged soil.

Allow approximately 75–90 cm between plants.
Don't be tempted to crowd young seedlings. Mature globe artichokes develop substantial foliage and can eventually reach around 1 m across.
💧 Watering
Water young plants regularly while they establish.
Mature plants become reasonably drought tolerant, but watering during prolonged hot, dry periods—particularly while buds are developing—can improve cropping. Severe moisture stress may result in fewer or smaller buds.
Adding a layer of organic mulch around the plants will help conserve soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Rich soil containing plenty of organic matter is ideal. An annual mulch of compost helps maintain soil condition.
If established plants are producing poorly, an organic high-potassium fertiliser applied during the growing season can encourage flower-bud production.

In South Africa, use the plant's basic climate requirements rather than following Northern Hemisphere planting months literally.
Globe artichokes are Mediterranean plants that prefer a sunny position, fertile soil and excellent drainage.
In winter-rainfall areas such as the Western Cape, establish plants so they can develop through the cooler, wetter part of the year and put on strong growth as conditions warm.
In summer-rainfall areas with significant winter frost, young plants need greater protection from severe cold. Starting seeds under protection and transplanting established seedlings after the worst frost is a safer approach.
Because South Africa contains very different climate zones, exact sowing dates should be adjusted for your local frost pattern and summer heat.

✂️ Harvesting
Harvest the artichokes while the buds are firm, compact and tightly closed, before the scales begin opening.
Cut the main central bud first. Regular harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing additional buds.
For eating, the fleshy bases of the scales and the tender artichoke heart are the prized portions.
If you don't harvest a few buds, allow them to open fully and you'll be rewarded with spectacular purple flowers that make the plant an impressive ornamental feature and provide food for visiting pollinators.
🌿 Perennial Care
Once established, globe artichokes can remain productive for several years. Mature clumps can eventually be divided to rejuvenate them and produce additional plants. The RHS recommends division roughly every four to five years to maintain vigour.
