🌱 Growing Instructions
Sowing: Sow basil seeds approximately 6 mm deep and cover lightly. Seeds can be sown directly into the garden once conditions are warm or started in trays for transplanting.
Germination: Basil generally germinates in approximately 5–10 days at 18–21°C under suitable conditions.
Light: Grow basil in a sunny position.
Soil: Choose moderately rich, moist soil with good drainage. Basil benefits from regular moisture and is not particularly drought tolerant.
Spacing: For standard basil production, plants can be spaced approximately 10–20 cm apart. Individual plants can be given additional room if you want them to develop into larger, bushier specimens.
Watering: Water regularly and aim to maintain even soil moisture, especially during hot weather. Avoid permanently waterlogged soil.
🇿🇦 Growing Basil in South Africa
Basil is primarily a warm-season herb. Johnny's growing guide lists basil for sowing from spring through summer and describes it as an annual, so in frost-prone South African gardens it is best established once cold conditions have passed.
In warm, frost-free areas, your growing window may be considerably longer. Containers are also an excellent option because plants can be positioned in good sunlight and moved to a protected location when necessary.
✂️ Harvesting
Begin lightly harvesting once your basil plants are well established. Regular cutting encourages continued branching and fresh growth. Johnny's recommends making a full harvest before flowering and leaving 10–15 cm of stem when cutting the plant back to encourage another flush of growth.
For the freshest leaves, harvest as required and handle them gently, as basil foliage bruises easily.
