Cold Stratification (Scarification) Instructions for Blackberry Seeds
Blackberry seeds require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy and improve germination rates. This mimics natural winter conditions.
Steps:
1. Prepare Seeds
Lightly rinse seeds and pat dry.
2. Moist Medium
Place seeds in a damp (not soaking wet) paper towel, peat moss, or sand.
3. Seal & Store
Put the seeds and medium into a sealed plastic bag or container.
4. Refrigerate
Store in the refrigerator at 34–40°F (1–4°C) for 6–12 weeks.
5. Check Periodically
Ensure the medium stays slightly moist and watch for early sprouting.
6. Planting After Stratification
- Remove seeds from the fridge
- Sow immediately in seed-starting soil
- Keep warm (65–75°F / 18–24°C) and consistently moist
Tip:
Scarification (lightly nicking or sanding the seed coat) can be done before stratification to further improve germination, but is optional.
This process significantly increases germination success and leads to stronger, healthier plants.
