🌵 YELLOW PRICKLY PEAR

Growing Instructions | Super Sprout Seeds

Planting material: 1 × green cactus pad, approximately 20 cm × 15 cm.

1. Allow the cutting to dry

If the cutting end is fresh, leave it in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated area for 7–14 days until a firm callus forms. Do not plant a freshly cut, wet surface.

2. Prepare your soil

Use sandy, gritty, well-draining soil. Cactus potting mix is ideal.

Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil, which can cause rotting.

3. Plant your cutting

- Place the cutting upright with the cut end facing down.
- Insert the bottom approximately 3–5 cm into the soil.
- Firm the soil gently around the base.
- Support the pad with small stones if necessary.

4. Watering

- Plant into dry or barely moist soil.
- Wait approximately 5–7 days before the first light watering, provided the cutting is properly callused.
- Water sparingly until roots develop.
- Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Important: Overwatering is the most common cause of cactus cutting rot.

5. Sunlight

Place in bright light initially. Gradually introduce the cutting to full sun as roots establish.

Established prickly pears prefer at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

6. Root Development

Roots may begin developing within approximately 2–6 weeks during warm growing conditions, although establishment can take longer.

Do not repeatedly pull the cutting out to check for roots.

7. Growth and Fruit

Once established, your cutting will begin producing new green pads.

Yellow prickly pear fruit develops when the plant reaches sufficient maturity. Fruiting can take several growing seasons and depends on climate and growing conditions.

8. Important Care

- Protect young cuttings from frost.
- Avoid overwatering.
- Wear thick gloves when handling pads and fruit.
- Watch out for tiny irritating glochids as well as larger spines.
- Grow in a suitable container where local regulations restrict planting.
