🌱 GROWING INSTRUCTIONS – MARBLE MUNCH MAIZE

Botanical Name: Zea mays

Plant Type: Warm-season annual

☀️ Sunlight: Full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily.

🌡️ Ideal Germination Temperature: 20–30°C.

🌱 Sowing Depth: 2.5–4 cm.

⏳ Germination: Approximately 5–10 days in warm, moist soil.

📏 Plant Spacing: 20–30 cm apart.

📏 Row Spacing: 60–90 cm.

🌿 Growing Season in South Africa: Spring to midsummer, once the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed.

STEP 1 – SOIL PREPARATION

Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-draining soil.

Work well-rotted compost into the soil before planting.

Maize grows best in soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged.

STEP 2 – SOWING

Sow seeds directly into the garden rather than transplanting.

Plant seeds approximately 2.5–4 cm deep.

Water gently after sowing and keep the soil consistently moist until germination.

For better pollination, plant maize in blocks of several short rows rather than one long row.

STEP 3 – WATERING & FEEDING

Water deeply and regularly, particularly during tassel formation, flowering and cob development.

Avoid allowing the soil to dry out during pollination.

Apply mulch around the plants to conserve moisture.

Feed with compost or a balanced fertiliser. Maize benefits from additional nitrogen during its early growth stages.

STEP 4 – POLLINATION

🌽 Maize is wind-pollinated.

The tassels at the top of the plant release pollen, which lands on the silks emerging from developing cobs.

Each silk connects to an individual kernel.

Good pollination is essential for fully developed cobs.

For small plantings, gently shake the tassels during pollen release to assist pollination.

STEP 5 – HARVESTING

🌽 Harvesting Time: Maturity depends on the particular strain and growing conditions. Allow cobs to mature fully for dry-grain use and seed saving.

For dried ornamental maize, leave the cobs on the plants until the husks become dry and papery and the kernels harden.

Harvest before prolonged wet weather damages the mature cobs.

Remove the husks or pull them back and hang the cobs in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated area until completely dry.

STEP 6 – SEED SAVING

Select healthy, fully mature cobs with the most desirable marbled colours and patterns.

Allow the kernels to dry thoroughly before removing them from the cobs.

Store seeds in airtight containers in a cool, dry and dark location.

🌾 IMPORTANT – CROSS-POLLINATION

Marble Munch Maize can cross-pollinate with other maize varieties flowering at the same time.

To preserve its distinctive characteristics, isolate it from other maize varieties by distance or flowering time.

For maintaining a stable open-pollinated variety, grow a sufficiently large population to reduce inbreeding.

🌽 PLEASE NOTE

Kernel colours and marbling patterns may vary naturally between individual plants and cobs.

The exact culinary suitability of this particular strain has not been verified. Grow primarily for ornamental dry cobs and seed saving unless its food-use characteristics are confirmed.
