🌱 DRAGON FRUIT GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Best Planting Season
- Spring to summer is ideal in South Africa.
- Ideal germination temperature: 22–30°C.
- Seeds can be started indoors in a warm, bright location.
2. Seed Preparation
- No cold stratification is required.
- Soaking is optional.
- Use clean seeds and a fine, well-draining seed-starting mixture.
3. Sowing Seeds
- Fill a seed tray or small pots with moist seed-starting mix.
- Scatter seeds evenly across the surface.
- Press seeds gently onto the soil.
- Leave uncovered or cover with an extremely thin layer of fine growing medium.
- Mist lightly with water.
- Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged.
4. Germination
- Germination generally takes 7–21 days, sometimes longer.
- Keep in bright, indirect light.
- Maintain warmth and humidity.
- Remove any humidity cover gradually once seedlings emerge to prevent fungal problems.
5. Transplanting
- Transplant when seedlings are strong enough to handle and have developed several small cactus segments.
- Use a rich but free-draining growing medium.
- Gradually introduce plants to stronger sunlight.
- Protect young plants from intense midday sun.
6. Sunlight and Position
- Mature plants prefer approximately 6 hours of sunlight daily, although some afternoon shade is beneficial in very hot regions.
- Choose a warm, sheltered location.
- Protect from frost and cold winter conditions.
7. Watering
- Water regularly during active growth.
- Allow the upper layer of soil to dry slightly between watering.
- Reduce watering during cold winter weather.

- Train the main stem upwards.
- Encourage branching near the top of the support.

9. Feeding
- Add well-rotted compost or organic matter.
- Feed moderately during the growing season.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth instead of flowering.
10. Flowering and Fruiting
- Plants grown from seed commonly take 3–5 years or longer to fruit.
- Large white flowers usually open at night.
