🌱 GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
Eureka Lemon Tree Seeds
1. Seed Preparation
- Use fresh, viable lemon seeds.
- Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours.
- Carefully remove any remaining fruit pulp.
- Optionally peel away the outer seed coat without damaging the embryo to encourage faster germination.
- Lemon seeds do not require cold stratification.
2. Sowing
- Sow in spring or summer, or indoors with suitable warmth.
- Use a light, well-draining seed-starting mixture.
- Plant seeds approximately 1 cm deep.
- Water gently and keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged.
3. Germination
- Ideal temperature: 22–28°C.
- Germination time: Approximately 2–6 weeks, sometimes longer.
- Place in bright, indirect light.
- Maintain warmth and moisture throughout germination.
4. Transplanting
- Transplant seedlings when they have developed several true leaves and a healthy root system.
- Move into individual pots containing well-drained, fertile potting soil.
- Gradually introduce seedlings to stronger sunlight.
- Protect young plants from harsh afternoon sun and frost.
5. Sunlight & Position
- Mature lemon trees prefer 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Choose a sheltered, sunny position.
- Protect young trees from strong winds and freezing temperatures.
- Suitable for large containers with adequate drainage.
6. Watering
- Water regularly during active growth.
- Allow the upper soil surface to dry slightly between watering.
- Avoid permanently saturated soil, which can cause root rot.
- Container-grown trees may need more frequent watering during hot weather.
7. Feeding
- Feed with a balanced citrus fertiliser containing essential micronutrients.
- Follow the manufacturer's recommended application rates.
- Apply compost or organic mulch around the root zone, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
8. Pruning & Maintenance
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.
- Prune lightly to maintain an open, healthy shape.
- Watch for aphids, citrus leaf miners and scale insects.
- Avoid heavy pruning of young trees.
9. Flowering & Fruiting
- Seed-grown lemon trees may take approximately 5–10 years or longer to produce fruit.
- Flowering and fruiting depend on climate, growing conditions and plant maturity.
- Seed-grown plants may differ from the original Eureka variety.
- Grafted Eureka lemon trees are recommended when true-to-type fruit is essential.
🌿 South African Growing Tip
In the Western Cape, start seeds indoors or in a protected area during cooler months. Transplant outdoors once temperatures are consistently warm and the risk of frost has passed.
Keep young citrus trees protected from cold winter winds and ensure excellent drainage during periods of heavy rainfall.
