The pepino melon, or tree melon, is a delicious, unique fruit that you can grow at home from seed.
They grow quickly and can bear fruit within 4 to 6 months after planting. Pepino dulce is parthenocarpic, meaning it does not need pollination to set fruit. However, it produces a heavier crop if other pepinos are nearby to cross-pollinate. It will not set fruit until evening temperatures reach 65 degrees.
The pepino melon plant is a perennial with a lifespan of four and half years, propagated from cuttings, and typically planted at a space of three by three feet. It can grow to a height of 1.2 meters when fully matured.
Pepinos should be planted in sun exposure and in well draining, slightly moist soil. It can also be grown in partial shade but the best fruit production will occur in full sun.
