Goji, goji berry, or wolfberry, is the fruit of either Lycium barbarum or Lycium chinense, two closely related species of boxthorn in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. L. barbarum and L. chinense fruits are similar but can be distinguished by differences in taste and sugar content.
Sow seeds 8mm deep. Keep soil moist but never wet or dry. Seeds should germinate in around 14-28 days at a soil temperature of 20-25°C. Transplant seedlings to the garden once they have their first true leaves and are large enough to handle (usually 5-10cm tall).
Grow goji berries in well-composted soil in a sunny position. Plants need to be spaced 1m apart for an informal hedge or screen. Prune back in late winter to get a good crop of berries in late summer. Goji berries can also be grown in containers, but this may limit the size they reach.
