Gargamel produces striking elongated, plum-shaped fruits, often finishing in a small pointed tip. As the tomatoes ripen, the base develops rich red to orange-red tones with contrasting streaks, while areas exposed to strong sunlight can develop beautiful dark purple to almost black anthocyanin pigmentation.
The variety originated in the USA from an accidental hybrid selected by Phil Seneca of Good Mind Seeds, with seed first offered in 2013.

🌈 Extraordinary Colour
One of Gargamel's defining characteristics is its strong anthocyanin pigmentation.
The dark blue-purple to almost black colouring develops most strongly on parts of the fruit receiving direct sunlight. As the underlying fruit ripens to red and orange-red, the combination creates Gargamel's distinctive striped, multicoloured appearance.
Fruit colour and markings can naturally vary between individual tomatoes.
🌱 Growing Instructions
Sowing
Start Gargamel tomato seeds in trays, modules or small pots.
Sow approximately 5 mm deep in a fine, well-draining seed-starting mixture. Keep the medium consistently moist but never waterlogged. A temperature around 20–26°C provides suitable warmth for germination.
Provide seedlings with plenty of bright light once they emerge.
🌿 Transplanting
Transplant seedlings into larger pots once they have developed true leaves and are strong enough to handle.
Plant outdoors once conditions are reliably warm and the danger of frost has passed. Gradually harden seedlings before moving them permanently outdoors.

Grow in full sun.
Good sunlight is especially important with Gargamel because light exposure encourages the development of the characteristic dark anthocyanin pigmentation on the fruit.
↔️ Spacing
Allow approximately 60–100 cm between plants, depending on how you train and support them.
Good spacing improves airflow and gives vigorous plants room to develop.
🌱 Growth Habit
Gargamel is generally described as a vigorous, indeterminate, regular-leaf tomato, meaning plants continue growing and producing fruit through the season rather than setting one concentrated crop.
Provide a strong stake, cage or trellis to support the developing plant and fruit.
💧 Watering
Water deeply and consistently, preferably at soil level.
Avoid dramatic changes between extremely dry and saturated soil. Mulching around established plants can help conserve moisture and moderate fluctuations in soil moisture.
🍅 Harvesting
Gargamel is generally considered a mid-season tomato.
Don't use the black colouring alone to judge ripeness—the anthocyanin colour can develop before the tomato is fully ripe. Look for the underlying fruit colour to change to its mature red/orange-red tones and for the fruit to develop a slight give when gently handled.

Gargamel is documented as an open-pollinated variety.
Gardeners interested in seed saving can allow fully mature, healthy fruit to ripen and collect seed for future growing. Because Gargamel has historically shown some variation in plant and fruit characteristics, selecting seed from plants displaying your preferred Gargamel traits is worthwhile.
