1. Excellent Source of Fiber for Digestive Health
Like all grass hays, orchard hay is rich in the long-strand fiber essential for a rabbit's digestive system.
Prevents GI Stasis: The fiber keeps the gut moving properly, preventing the dangerous and potentially fatal condition of gastrointestinal (GI) stasis.
Promotes Healthy Cecotropes: It supports the formation of healthy cecotropes, the nutrient-rich droppings that rabbits re-ingest.

2. Low in Calcium (Compared to Alfalfa)
This is a significant benefit, especially for adult rabbits.
Prevents Urinary Issues: Alfalfa hay and some other legumes are high in calcium. Excess calcium can lead to the formation of bladder sludge or painful urinary stones. Orchard hay has a lower calcium content, making it a much safer staple for adult rabbits.

3. Soft Texture and Sweet, Mild Aroma
This is where orchard hay often wins over picky eaters and sensitive owners.
Great for Picky Eaters: Many rabbits find the softer texture and sweeter, grassier smell of orchard hay more palatable than the sometimes stemmy and stronger-smelling Timothy hay.

4. Hypoallergenic Properties
This is a key distinguishing feature.
Ideal for Allergic Rabbits/Humans: Some rabbits and their human caregivers are allergic to the pollen and dust found in Timothy hay. Orchard grass is a different plant species and does not contain the same allergens, making it a perfect Timothy hay alternative for those with sensitivities.

5. Encourages Foraging Behavior

Important:
1. Gradual Introduction: Orchard hay is a nutritious addon, but like any new food, it should be introduced slowly to avoid digestive upset. Start with a small amount (a few blades) and monitor your rabbit for 24 hours.
2. Watch for Reactions: Some rabbits may have sensitive stomachs. If you notice soft stools, bloating, or lack of appetite, discontinue feeding and consult a veterinarian.
3. Not a Replacement: A healthy rabbit diet should be 80% hay, and you should never replace a rabbit’s primary diet of hay, fresh water, and balanced pellets. It is a treat or supplement, not a staple food.
4. Consult Your Vet: If your rabbit has pre-existing health conditions, check with a vet before adding new foods to their diet.
5. Not intended for rabbits under 6 months.
