Khan This monograph investigates the original creation of Adam ('alayh al-salām) by utilizing the logical two-tier approach of Muslim dialecticians whereby firstly, the mere rational possibility (imkān) of a human being created without biological parentage will be demonstrated, and secondly, to prove its actual occurrence (wuqu'). The author takes a critical approach to prove that irreconcilable theological inconsistencies would arise from denying Adamic originality, thereby proving that belief in his original creation remains certain (qat'i) notwithstanding the demands of the theory of evolution.

Existence And Quiddity In The Later Ash'arite Kalam

Author: Mohd Zaidi Ismail Aimed at shedding some light on the intellectual process that historically led to the sophisticated elaborations and analyses of existence (wujūd) and quiddity (māhiyyah) by such later Ṣūfī metaphysicians as 'Abd al-Raḥmān al-Jāmī, 'Abd al-Ghanī al-Nāblusī, Mullā Ṣadrā and others, the present work explores the position of a school of thought in the Islamic history—that is to say, later ash‘arisms as represented primarily by its two famous mutakallims, one from the 7th/8th century of Hijrah and the other from the 8th/9th century, namely: ‘Aḍud al-Dīn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Ījī (d. 756 H.) and al-Sayyid al-Sharīf ‘Alī b. Muḥammad al-Jurjānī (d. 816 H.)—which was directly and actively involved in the intellectual debates about the nature of existence and quiddity that resulted in a creative synthesis of the aforementioned metaphysicians. It is therefore an attempt to survey how these two mutakallims, the former being the main actor and the latter being his commentator, dealt with the various positions adopted pertaining to the nature of existence and its relation to quiddity. In so doing, it selects al-Ījī’s widely acclaimed kalām manual, al-Mawāqif, and the most famous among its many commentaries, the one done by al-Jurjānī.

The Malay Exposition Of Al-Sanusi's Umm Al-Barahin

Author: Che' Razi Jusoh This work attemps to give an insight into Umm al-Barahin authored by Yusuf al-Sanusi (d. 940/1490), a famous North African scholar who was not only a theologian but also a pious sufi whose life was fully dedicated to the education of his community. Al-Sanusi's Umm al-Barahin, a short treatise on Islamic creed has greatly influenced people in many countries, and has been translated into Malay and commented upon by a number of prominent Malay scholars like Muhammad Zayn al-Ashi, Dawud al-Fatani, Zayn al-'Abidin al-Fatani and others. The Malay commentaries of the Umm al-Barahin, which elucidate and elaborate on al-Sanusi's typology of the Divine Attributes and other related issues, prove that the Malay scholars in the past had achieved a very high degree of understanding of Islamic ontology, epistemology and metaphysics. Thus, a new modern edition and translation is needed to expose the richness of the Malay heritage which once flourished throughout the region for the sake of new generation. The work is concluded with a critique of the criticism put forward in commentaries authored by Malay writers which we will illustrate to be unsubstantiated interpretation of the original texts of Umm al-Barahin.
