Description:
Vagacyte 450mg Tablet contains Valganciclovir, an antiviral medication used for the treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections. It is primarily prescribed to treat CMV retinitis in adult patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and to prevent CMV infection in organ transplant recipients who are at risk due to receiving a CMV-positive donor organ.
Therapeutic Uses:
Treatment of active CMV retinitis in patients with AIDS
Prevention of CMV disease in kidney, heart, or other organ transplant recipients who are at high risk
Mechanism of Action:
Valganciclovir is a prodrug of ganciclovir, which, once converted in the body, inhibits viral DNA synthesis by blocking the action of the viral DNA polymerase enzyme. This prevents the virus from multiplying and spreading, thereby helping control the infection.
Packaging:
Available in tablet form, typically packed in blister strips or bottles. Standard packaging includes 10 tablets per strip or 60 tablets per bottle, depending on market requirements.
Note:
Vagacyte should be used under strict medical supervision. Regular monitoring of blood counts and renal function is recommended during treatment due to the risk of bone marrow suppression and other side effects. This medication is not a cure for CMV but is effective in managing and preventing the progression of the infection.
