Product Description
Product Name: Indinavir
Form: Oral Capsule
Category: Antiretroviral (Protease Inhibitor)
Indication: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1) Infection
Indinavir is a protease inhibitor used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It works by selectively binding to the active site of the HIV-1 protease enzyme, thereby inhibiting its activity and preventing the virus from maturing into infectious particles.
Mechanism of Action:
Indinavir inhibits HIV-1 protease, an essential enzyme involved in the final stage of viral replication. By blocking this enzyme, it interferes with the processing of viral polyproteins, leading to the production of immature, non-infectious viral particles, thereby reducing viral load in the body.
Key Benefits:
Potent inhibitor of HIV replication
Helps improve immune function when used in combination therapy
Useful in treatment-experienced patients with prior resistance
Part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)
Dosage & Administration:
Administered orally, typically every 8 hours, on an empty stomach or with a light, low-fat meal. Adequate hydration is essential to minimize the risk of kidney stones.
Important Information:
Not used as monotherapy β always part of a combination regimen
Regular monitoring of viral load, kidney function, and liver enzymes is recommended
Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment
Avoid co-administration with drugs that may cause serious interactions via CYP3A4
